Brief: To create a book which works both as an ebook and in print, using Adobe In-Design and software such as Blurb.
Response: I created a book to showcase some of my illustrations. Much of my work to date is feminine and delicate and often focuses on the female subject. I therefore designed the book around an A to Z of girls names, linking in London place names and landmarks within the text to give the concept and text another dimension. After much exploration into different layouts, I created a web-style layout within the book, using thumbnails and coloured borders as web navigation might. The delicate illustrations needed to be anchored on the page and cropping imagery and using borders around images seemed to provide one solution to this problem. I wanted the book to feel personal and so I added text in a handwritten typeface, at different angles on different pages, as if the words might have been jotted down by the author. If you click into a thumbnail image below, you can flick through the finished book design (NB. the first slide incorporates both the back and the front cover).
