Wimbledon Art Studios: Open Studios

The lovely Laura Stamps invited me to go along to Wimbledon Art Studios Open Studios. I went with a friend and spent a lovely lazy Sunday afternoon pottering around the sprawling complex. My little brain could hardly take in the myriad of different styles and media, all packed together in one massively creative hub of a building. It was incredibly inspiring and made me feel that I would love to be a part of a community or place like this – a space to spend hours sketching, creating and expressing thoughts in a way that I so rarely do whilst caught on my hamster wheel in London. Of course I am completely ignoring the more stressful bit where creativity needs to earn money!

Either way, I can’t wait for the next Open Studios for another dose of inspiration, and maybe some Christmas presents too by then!

Concepts for the CD cover/cards project

BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design) Level 3 at WAES  and our first project brief asked for lyric cards (or a little booklet) and a CD cover for a compliation EP/album made up of tracks picked from music chosen by classmates. These are some of my preliminary sketches…

Linocut + Etching

This is my first stab at linocut. The A3 image took a day to cut and I found it quite tricky to get precise prints using the press, but I completely fell for the medium and its bold monochrome marks. I also used my “poptart” collage from the WAES Art Movement project to create samples of photo-etching, with lots of different colours and inks. I loved the delicacy and accuracy of the prints, but I really love linocut for its boldness and simplicity. And I love that I can create prints at home with lino, a linocutter, some ink, paper and a rolling pin!
